🚫

"You should not cook or touch food during your period — it will spoil"

✅ The Truth

Menstruation has no effect on food preservation. This myth has no scientific basis. Women on their period can cook, garden, and do all normal activities safely.

Source: WHO Women's Health Guidelines
🚫

"Bathing or washing hair during your period will cause heavy flow or make cramps worse"

✅ The Truth

Warm baths can actually relieve cramps by relaxing uterine muscles. Hygiene is especially important during menstruation — bathing regularly is recommended.

Source: American College of OB/GYN
🚫

"Irregular periods mean you are not able to have children"

✅ The Truth

Irregular cycles can result from stress, weight changes, PCOS, or thyroid issues — many of which are treatable. Irregular periods alone don't equal infertility. See a gynecologist for proper assessment.

Source: ACOG, 2023
🚫

"You cannot get pregnant during your period"

✅ The Truth

While unlikely, pregnancy during menstruation is possible — especially for women with short cycles. Sperm can survive 5 days in the body. Contraception should be used consistently if avoiding pregnancy.

Source: Planned Parenthood
🚫

"Drinking cold water will 'freeze' your blood and cause clots"

✅ The Truth

Drinking cold water has no effect on menstrual flow or clotting. Small clots (smaller than a coin) during heavy flow are normal and result from uterine lining shedding — not temperature.

Source: NHS UK
🚫

"Using tampons or menstrual cups means you are no longer a virgin"

✅ The Truth

Virginity is not determined by whether a hymen is intact. The hymen naturally varies in shape and can stretch for many reasons. Tampon or cup use does not affect virginity.

Source: Planned Parenthood, UNFPA
🚫

"Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea) are normal and every woman must endure them"

✅ The Truth

Mild discomfort is common, but severe pain that disrupts daily life is not something you must endure. It can signal endometriosis, fibroids, or adenomyosis — all treatable conditions. Please see a doctor.

Source: Endometriosis UK, ACOG
🚫

"Eating 'hot' foods like pepper soup will increase your flow and be dangerous"

✅ The Truth

Spicy foods don't increase menstrual flow. However, some women find spicy food worsens bloating or diarrhoea during their period — which is a gut sensitivity response, not flow-related.

Abeg, does anyone else get really bad anxiety before their period? Like clockwork, 3 days before I just become a different person 😭 My doctor said it's PMDD — I didn't even know that was a thing!

Hey gorgeous! 🌸 I'm Tomi — your cycle bestie. I'm here to help you understand your body, answer your period questions, and just be that knowledgeable friend you can ask anything. What's on your mind today?
Why do I get so moody before my period?
Tomi 💕
Oya, let me explain! 😊 In the luteal phase (days after ovulation), your oestrogen drops sharply and progesterone rises, then also falls before your period. These hormonal changes affect your serotonin — your "feel good" chemical — which can cause irritability, anxiety, or low mood.

This is called PMS. For some women it's very mild, for others it can be disruptive (PMDD). Regular exercise, reducing salt and caffeine, and getting enough sleep can help a lot. If it's severely affecting your daily life, please speak to your doctor — it's very treatable! 💕
